Reminders - Oct 19 Pack Meeting

A few reminders:
1) Please get your award reporting info to your den leader by Friday. Copy Stacy (sagemom1@yahoo.com) on that email. This is just for awards that are ready to be given to the boys. (Please keep your den leader up to date on partial progress toward awards, but that's not what we're asking for right now.)
-- I will order a bicycling belt loop for the boys who attended the bike rodeo. Please advise if I missed anyone: Dennis, Keahi, Hugh, William, Jack, Leo, Dane, Shenn, Shion, Carter, Jon, Noah, Julian

2) Den leaders: Compile this info for your den and get it to Stacy over the weekend.

3) Party next week is a Halloween theme.
-- Come in costume (adults, too!)
-- Each den should have an activity the boys can do. They usually work like stations the boys move around to at will, but feel free to do different stuff.
-- Potluck: Everyone bring a main dish. If you also want to bring extra stuff (pupus, salads, desserts, etc.), that's great, but please make sure you bring a main dish (we had one potlucks with 7 veggie platters...)
-- Bring mess kits (or whatever you want to eat on) for your family. The pack has some paper plates and plasticware we set out, but there are no guarantees there will be enough, and we really try to encourage environmentally friendly scouting events by washing our mess kits. Leave no trace!

I just dug out our facility permit for this year. A reservation for the community center for tomorrow was requested, but was not in the list of dates on the permit I have. They frequently put evening and daytime dates on different permits, and I am 99% sure that we have the center reserved for tomorrow, but I cannot find the correct permit. Last year, we had a run-in with an extremely irate McEnroe wanna-be from the tennis club who stopped just short of physical violence last year when we closed the parking lot. (He would have had to park on the street and walk 40 more feet to his tennis exercise.) After that, the police were called and complaints were made. Although Parks & Rec determined that we had every right to close the lot, we were still admonished for not having the permit in hand. Given our history on this matter, we feel like we need to have the permit in hand in order to hold the event there, and the parks & rec office isn't open until Monday. This is my bad for not being able to locate the permit, which I obtained over a year ago. Sorry for the mix-up.

A reminder about the bike rodeo (a.k.a. All Wheels Rodeo).

-- Sunday (Oct 09) at 10am at the Kula Community Center

-- Volunteers, please show up at 9:15am

-- This is not a potluck (I've had several questions about this) - please get some food into your boys before coming to keep energy up.

-- Siblings welcome. Close-toed shoes required for all (Scouts, siblings, adults...)

-- Helmets required. If you don't have one, we can probably share the helmets we have.

-- Anything on wheels is ok (bikes, scooters, rollerblades, skateboards, etc). We had a question about an electric scooter, and decided that electric-powered devices are ok if the parents approve them, but no gas motors, please.

A huge mahalo to Velva, who volunteered to get up there at 8 and close off the parking lot, as well as the others who signed up to lead this event.

1) Popcorn - Yesterday marked the start of our annual popcorn fundraiser. We have activities planned for the last two weekends in October, so please hit this hard in the beginning of the month. For more details, see last month's meeting announcements. If you need popcorn forms, let me know.

I really cannot emphasize enough that everyone's participation in popcorn sales makes our Scouting activities possible. Our bank account is doing ok, but not great. We have 3 main expenses in the year (2 camps and the Christmas party), but we are also interested in upgrading our pinewood derby track and a few other things. In order to make all this happen, we need a group effort to sell popcorn. If anyone runs a business or knows someone who does, these make great gifts to clients and colleagues.

Velva is arranging this, but if anyone wants to learn how it's done (for next year), that would be recommended.

2) All Wheels Rodeo (Bike Rodeo) - next Sunday 10am

-- We need a volunteer to get out there about 8am and close off the parking lot and maintain a presence so that other overflow parking needs don't derail our activity.

-- Need a volunteer to lead the bike and road safety part of this. I have hyperlinks and PDFs from past years, so the research is done...

-- If you have any bike tools, pumps, etc and the aptitude to use them (very basic), we could use another volunteer for the maintenance station.

-- Every boy needs a helmet! If you don't have one, buy/borrow one. If you have an extra, bring it. If you really can't get one, come anyway, and we'll loan you one from another boy.

3) Halloween costume party - Oct 19

-- Each den needs to arrange an activity. Lots of games and fun things are online (sample).

-- We have several volunteers to set up. We need one person to coordinate the effort and arrange times.

4) Camp Olowalu: Need someone to do a Costco/Supermarket run and get all the food to camp. Preferably someone in the tiger, wolf, bear, web1 dens to learn about planning the menu/budget for camps.

Parent volunteers: Each activity we do this year is the last one for the Webelos2 den and their families (including me!). In addition to volunteering for the sake of helping the Pack, this is a good chance for the families of the tiger, wolf, bear, and Webelos1 dens to learn how we run things from the parents who have been through this many times. Some events are more complicated (pinewood derby, campouts, popcorn), others are very simple. No activity in Scouting requires rocket science to organize, and our way isn't necessarily the best/only way to do it, so you'll do fine without us, but please take advantage of this time to learn how things work from us by volunteering.

Camp Olowalu

All:

We are tentatively scheduled for camp on Oct 22-23. Hooray! It is now on the pack calendar at http://mauipack14.org. More details will follow once we get this firmed up. Sorry for the last-minute notice, as we are working around the camp's schedule to find a date that works. They have comp'ed us the last few years, but that means we have to be flexible about taking the dates they are open.

This is one of the highlights of the year for the boys. We get to camp right on the beach! Does anyone have a current (unexpired) lifeguarding certification? Anyone have any personal contacts with a lifeguard who might want to earn a few bucks? We must have a lifeguard for all swimming activities.

Fwd: Parade Information

Hi all:

Here is the info on the parade Thursday. See the email below and the attached info. For those of you who have done this before, it is similar to previous parades, except maybe the parking. Here are the main points:
-- Wear class A uniform.
-- Families are welcome to march alongside. (Tigers need an adult partner at all events.)
-- Close-toed shoes required FOR EVERYONE (scouts and family members, too)
-- We will start at the lawn in front of UH Maui off of Kaahumanu Ave. The entrance by the main gate will probably be closed. There are usually a ton of Scouts around there, so just look around till you find Pack14. I will look for some shade for us to wait in.
-- They said to park at the stadium at the end of the parade route. This is pretty far from the start, so that doesn't make a lot of sense to me... In the past, parking was by the recycling center off of Wahinepio in the drive-in movie field. They said there is no parking in the "back lot", but I'm not sure what that means... Anyhow, that's the info I have.
-- The parade starts at 4:30pm. They say the road closes at 4:15, but it seems like it was shut down earlier in past years. I would suggest folks show up by 4pm at the latest. Given the confusion over the parking, you might want to shoot for earlier.
-- We will march down to the end, and we usually finish up by the baseball stadium. After that, they usually give out passes to the fair.
-- Bring water and wear sunscreen.
-- There is always a lot of standing around waiting for it to start... Any volunteers to prepare an activity that doesn't require a lot of props?

Reminder - Pack Meeting Wednesday

Hi all,

Reminder - we have pack meeting on Wednesday: 6:30pm at the Kula Community Center. Please try to arrive 5-10 minutes early, since it always seems to take a few minutes to get the boys' uniforms tucked in, find a seat, greet people, etc.

I have had a number of people asking me about dates for this and that, so I just wanted to remind everyone that I try to keep the Pack calendar up to date at http://www.mauipack14.org/
-- We can put den schedules on there, too, if you like.
-- If you have an iPhone, you can add the calendar to your phone. I think you just click on this address in your phone and it should walk you through it: http://www.google.com/calendar/ical/davidaskov%40mauipack14.org/public/basic.ics
-- If you have an Android, go to your gmail account, open the calendar, click on the "add" link in the left under "other calendars", and choose "add by URL". Enter the calendar URL under the iPhone.

Spook o ree: A few updates.
1) Cabins are first-come, first-served. This is a Council event, so they may sell out. I will be in a tent.
2) Make checks out to "Boy Scouts of America".
3) The registration is for both adults and children, so put both on your form and include that in your payment.
4) Take it to the Council service center (Mon-Fri, 8-4) or mail to:
Maui County Council, Boy Scouts of America
200 Liholiho Street
Wailuku, Maui, HI 96793
5) Please let me know participant names you send in, so I can double-check with the Council and make sure their list matches ours.
6) The Council said there are no medical or release forms to fill out. I half expect they will be requested later. Stay tuned...

See you Wednesday!

1) Pack meeting next Wednesday (21 SEP), 6:30pm at the Kula Community Center. Please come on time so we can finish on time.

2) Awards - If your son has any awards to report, please send those by Friday to your den leader and copy Stacy (sagemom1@yahoo.com). Don't know who your den leader is? Then just email Stacy this month.
Summer camps: I will try to compile a list of awards earned by the boys at summer camps. Since they all should have earned the same things, please let me know if you have a list of those (I sure don't!). I have some notes Ben made for me from Webelos camp. I only attended one day of Cub Camp, so I need more help with those awards.

3) The Council is trying a new event in the fall for Halloween. They are calling it the Spook-o-ree. This is an overnighter at Camp Maluhia 28-29 OCT. This is strictly a per-family sign-up, so you're on your own to sign up. There are a limited number of cabins available, so sign up early if staying in a tent isn't your thing. Sign-up form is attached, and is also attached to the calendar event on the website
Note the request to bring nine 1-gallon milk containers for the crafts. Anyone have connections to a coffee shop or restaurant that might have these?

4) NEW SCOUTS: The Council will hold their annual New Scout Adventure on Nov 19th. I think it is a one-day event at Camp Maluhia. It is meant to be fun for the boys, as well as teach them a bit about scouting and how it works. More details to come as I get 'em.

5) The popcorn kick-off meeting was tonight. Expect news next week at the pack meeting. This our biggest fund-raiser of the year, and usually is during the month of October.

6) We are definitely marching in the County Fair parade 29 SEP. Plan on being down at UH-Maui around 3:30pm-ish. They usually give us Fair tickets afterwards, so many of the boys go in to the Fair that evening. More details to come as I get 'em.

7) All-Wheels Rodeo coming up  09 OCT at 10am. Plan on bringing something on wheels (bike, scooter, skateboard, rollerblades...) and a HELMET. More details to come at the Pack meeting.

Let me know if I forgot anything, and I'll add it to the pack meeting announcements.

Re: Welcome to the new Scouting year

Hi all:

We will be marching in the County Fair parade on 9/29. It is after school (3pm-ish), and the boys walk down Kaahumanu Ave. At the end of the parade, they usually give the boys tickets to the fair. Please plan to wear your full uniform.

We typically have near 100% attendance for this, so please reply if you cannot make it

In other news, we will be starting up the dens shortly, so stay tuned for that.

Hi everyone:

What a great first meeting we had last night! It was great to see a number of new boys interested in Cub Scouting and the Kendo clinic was a big hit. I'll try to be as brief as I can, but we went through a lot of announcements last night, which I'll try to sum up.

Upcoming dates:
-- Sep 03: Cub-o-ree - This is a Council event that is fun for the boys. It will be from 8-11 AM in Wells Park in Wailuku. MAP. Wear class B uniforms.
-- SEP 21: Pack Meeting - 6:30pm at Kula Community Center
-- SEP 29: County Fair Parade - (tentative) The boys march in the parade every year. Lots of fun!
-- OCT 09: All Wheels Rodeo (a.k.a. Bike Rodeo) - 10 AM - Work on bike (or rollerblade, skateboard, scooter) skills and safety.
All dates are on the pack website. Note that all emails to the Pack address get posted to our Blog. If you ever misplace an email, just click on the "Blog" link on the website.

Dens: The boys are organized into dens according to age/grade.
1st grade - Tigers - den #5 - It is normal to take a little while to establish a den leader the 1st year
2nd grade - Wolves - den #3 - Hiroko Ward - hiro@bamboochan.com
3rd grade - Bears - den #1 - Jonathon Yudis - priorityearth@gmail.com
4th grade - Webelos 1 - den #4 - David Askov (we will join up the two webelos dens for some activities)
5th grade - Webelos 2 - den #7 - David Askov - davidaskov@mauipack14.org

We will be getting the dens organized very soon, so stay tuned for that.

Uniforms and Books:
-- The pack will provide a book and neckerchief. Boys who attended the cookout/party at Keokea should already have these. If you did not get one, please let me know so we can get them for you. We have various other uniform pieces in our hand-me-downs box first-come, first-served.
-- The rest of the uniform can be purchased at Maui Sporting Goods in Wailuku.
-- The most important parts to get are the shirt and the hat. Here is a link to the uniform pieces. For grades 1-3, get a blue shirt and a hat that matches your den year (see above). For grades 4-5 either blue or the tan Boy Scout uniform is fine, but if you're buying a new one, get the tan.
-- Insignia: Get a world crest, council patch, red pack numbers (1 & 4), den patch (see numbers above). The uniforms should come with the American flag. Patch placement guide (see page 2).
-- Class B: When getting dirty or sweaty, we will wear class B uniforms. This is basically just a pack t-shirt, which we sell at pack meetings for $9.
-- Close toed shoes: These are required at all events for all Scouts and family members attending. Our insurance requires this, so we appreciate you helping us out with it.

Cost:
We passed out application forms for new boys. I have more if you still need one. In general, Scouting is a very affordable activity. Dues are $40 for new Scouts. (We will collect from returning Scouts later this fall.) There are uniforms to buy. There is a voluntary donation fundraiser for the Council each year. And then there may be some materials to buy for your den activities (e.g.: wood to do craft projects) and food for some potlucks. We do 1-2 fundraisers each year that have, in the past, covered the rest of the costs. The only other thing I can think of is there may be Council events that have fees associated with them (e.g.: summer camp). If cost is an issue, talk to us, and we can work out a scholarship. We never want a boy to miss the chance to be a Scout because of money.

Just call if you have any questions.

thanks, David

Aloha All,

Camp Maluhia is in need of a few good men.  The National Guard has done a good job in building the cast in place walls and can use our help to take down the forms because they were delayed by weather and plumbing inspections.  Anyone willing to assist in disassembling the forms please join us at Camp Maluhia this weekend.  Bring your hammer, crow bar, protective eyewear, and any other tools that may help in dismantling the forms.  Lunch will be provided so please provide me with a head count by replying to this message.

Cuboree Saturday

All:

Our pack's activity at the Cuboree will be making animal tracks. I am shooting to arrive at 7:30 to set up. If anyone gets this email in time, help is appreciated.

I'm not sure exactly how this event will work, but I've seen things like it where the boys split up into groups that have leaders (either adults or Boy Scout volunteers). Then, the boys will work their way through stations sponsored by the various packs. Any adults that can peel away and help run ours are appreciated.

See you there!

new Scouting year!

Hi everyone. I hope you had (are having) a great summer. We are about to kick off our new Scouting year, so I just wanted to give you a preview. Our first meeting of the year will be AUG 31 at the Kula Community Center at 6:30pm. As always, I try to keep the calendar up to date at http://mauipack14.org.

Everyone please invite at least one boy to attend our first meeting. Maybe it's one of your son's friends from school, sports, church, or the neighborhood. I will make up flyers.

We will hold some recruiting drives at various schools. This may range from passing out flyers to classroom visits to presentations at back to school night. Please take a moment to let me know if you see opportunities to help arrange these at your son's school and let me know of any events on the calendar that look like good opportunities (e.g.: back to school night). I would like to hit Carden, Kula, and Waldorf at a bare minimum. If we can get into Pukalani, Montessori, and Makawao, that would be great, too.

James has agreed to take over (more like take back) much of the Cubmaster duties. I assume you all know James, but he was the Cubmaster before me. I will be focusing this year on leading the Webelos and also working on getting our committee going, and all the things that entails (membership, advancement, training, finance, fundraining). We will continue to have fun/learning programming at each Pack meeting, so it's not just announcements and awards. We really need parents to help arrange activities, especially if you know of any guest speakers. We may have each den organize a meeting, too.

We are looking into dates for a family camp this fall (Olowalu again?) and also have lots of other fun events planned (bike rodeo, Halloween & Christmas parties, spring campout, pinewood derby, etc.). The Council has a Cub-o-ree planned for Sep 03 from 8-11. More details to follow.

Lastly, if you want off this list, let me know.

I look forward to seeing everyone and to a great Scouting year!
