Re: Pinewood Derby announcements

Hi all. I will try to type up the announcements from tonight's pack meeting shortly. The main pinewood derby info is in the emails below. Also:
-- We will use class B uniforms
-- The derby is at the Kula Community Center
-- The kits you received have rules in them - PLEASE READ THEM. The cars must meet the size, weight, and other requirements. We had a few cars needing adjustments this evening to comply.

See ya. David

Hi everyone. A couple of announcements regarding the Pack meeting and the Pinewood Derby.

1) The email below this contains the main details you need, so read from the bottom up.

*** Pack meeting on Friday at 6:30 - the track will be set up for the boys to do some trial runs after the meeting, so bring your cars (NO WET PAINT PLEASE)

*** Check-in and the weighting station will be Saturday from 10:00-11:00, with the race starting at 11:30. If you need to make adjustments to your car, plan to be there earlier than if you just need to check in.

2) WE NEED VOLUNTEERS - please reply. Will be setting up the track Friday at 3pm and showing up Saturday at 9am to get ready.

3) There will be a potluck Saturday. Bring a dish to share (not just pupus), items needed to serve your dish, and MESS KITS. The pack has a limited amount of disposable plates/plasticware, but no guarantees there'll be enough.

4) Can we get some volunteers to run some games/activities during the race? It needs to be something they can leave at any moment to race in a heat.

5) Don't put numbers on your car yet. You will be assigned a number at check-in. We will have some stickers if you've lost yours.

6) There doesn't appear to be a defined front or back to the car, like the other kits which have different measurements to the front/back axles. Just face them whichever way you like.

7) We will have races for the fastest car and the coolest car. There will be divisions for each den, plus a siblings/friends and a parents/adults division, as well as prizes for the overall winner from the Pack.

See you Friday, David

We have already distributed the Pinewood Derby kits. If you don't have one, someone in your den may have grabbed one for you at the Nov pack mtg. I will bring some to the party.

Note that WE ARE NOT USING THE STANDARD KITS YOU CAN BUY IN STORES so get one from us in order to compete. There will be separate adult and child competitions for friends, siblings, parents, aunties, etc. There should be a copy of the rules in each kit, and they are also on the documents page of the website (or direct link) just in case.

Key points:
-- We try to make these races more fun than competitive. That said, some boys spend a lot of time on their cars, so in the interest of fairness, we do have a check-in that will ensure the cars meet these rules.
-- We will have the track set up the night before and will be available to make minor adjustments to your car.
-- You may use glue/epoxy to hold the nails in place in the slots. Other than that, you must use the provided nails/wheels in the pre-cut slots in the blocks. DO NOT MOVE OR OTHERWISE MODIFY THE SLOTS. IGNORE ANYTHING TO THE CONTRARY IN THE INSTRUCTIONS.
-- Weight is the biggest factor in a car's success. You want to get as close to the 5 ounces as possible, but don't go over. We will have scales and weights at the pack meeting and check-in for last minute adjustments. It is easier to add weight at the last minute than remove it...
-- Cars with wet paint are not allowed.
-- Disqualified cars will still compete in the races (except wet paint), but cannot win awards.

need a volunteer

All:

Our badge/award coordinator, Maria, will be moving off-island, and we need someone to volunteer to do this. It needs to be someone with a Windows PC who has basic computer literacy to work the software. Note that February will be the last month she'll be doing badges, so we really need someone now.

thanks.

reminder - pack meeting and pinewood derby

Happy New Year all! A few quick notes:

1) Our pack meeting this month is on FRIDAY, Jan 28, at 6:30pm. Note the change from our usual schedule.
We will have the track set up, and will let the boys do trial runs with their pinewood derby car. NO WET PAINT on the track.

2) Volunteers: Please let me know if you can help with either -
-- We will set up the track on Friday afternoon (28th). We could use a few volunteers there around 3:30pm.
-- We need several people to help run the event. Plan to arrive by 9:30am on the 29th.

3) The pinewood derby is Saturday, Jan 29th. The tentative times are:
-- weighting and check-in: 10:00 - 11:00
-- race starts: 11:30
-- we'll do a potluck lunch, so plan to bring something to share.

4) Badge reporting deadline is Friday, Jan 21. Send your completed badge info to your den leader and copy Maria at galucan@yahoo.com
Den Leaders: Please send your compiled results to Maria by Mon, Jan 24.

5) Volunteer position needed: Unfortunately, Maria & Gato are leaving the island. We need someone new to do our badge reporting starting in March, but ideally learning the ropes January and February. Let me know if you will do this.

thanks, David
