Sorry - forgot to mention - in the past, they have accepted boys going into Webelos in the fall. If it works that way again, this would be for boys going into 4th or 5th grades next fall (this year's Bear and Web1 dens).

Recruitment and all that

Hello Parents:

Last meeting we discussed ways to get more boys (and parents) involved in scouting.  I have been working on that sooo....

PALS sign up:    I asked a PALS division director about giving out info bulletins at PALS sign up next week.  She received approval to have a flyer at the sign ups.  We did not receive permission to be their personally (take what you can get).  Is anybody willing or able to put a flyer together?  Failing a volunteer I will just print off a few hundred of the the old one with a few changes (names numbers and dates).

Working with Troops:  Troop 14 is having a recruitment night at Kula elem. from 5:30 to 6:30 on April 11.  They are willing to let us pop in at the end to push for Pack 14.  Is anybody willing to go?  I can provide materials, guidance, suggestions and so forth as needed.

Fundraising:  I spoke with Velva about a Flatbread fundraiser.  She is still willing to help organize that event (maybe others...maybe???).  Anyway, she will need help and we will need somebody to relay information like dates, times, needs, and so on.  Anybody up for that?  There is a huge lead time on this but doing a little starting now will allow us to have it happen this year without a whole lot of stress.

Medic 11 (Kula ambulance) has agreed to come to the next pack meeting, barring an emergency call(4/18) and we will be doing basic first aid...fun stuff.  If you have experience/knowledge/interest in this type of stuff.

Thanks...James

Hello everyone,

This is to remind you of our pack meeting tomorrow at 6:30, Kula
community center. We will be having guest speakers from kealia reserve
giving an interactive presentation (thank you David). Please plan to
show up a few minutes early, we are teaching our boys respect for those
who volunteer time for their benefit.

I am on duty but plan to be there. David will be there to say a final
goodbye and show appreciation to our speakers.

We will have a short breakout session of parents during the presentation
to give heads ups on upcoming events, needs, and the next meeting.

Thanks.

meeting / projector screen

Hi all,

I just wanted to remind everyone that our Pack meeting this month will be on the 4th Wednesday this month, or 3/28. We will have 2 park rangers from the new Kealia Pond NWR give an interactive presentation.

On that note, does anyone have a projector screen we can borrow? I'm thinking of something portable with a stand (not a wall-mounted screen).

thanks!

Hi all,

I just wanted to send a short note to thank all of you for the wonderful card and gift, but also for the many years of fantastic memories.

As we move forward, James Brent will be the new CubMaster. He is copied on this email, and also receives emails sent to the pack list. I will stay involved with the pack as the committee chair, but you probably won't see me much in day-to-day activities.

The committee can consist of as many as 8 distinct members (read more), so there is a lot to do! I'm still wrapping my head around it all, but in the coming year, we will focus on recruiting and fundraising, as well as examining the Pack's finances & expenses. The committee will focus on providing direction and guidance, but when it comes time for implementing the plans, there will definitely be some calls for volunteers to fill these important roles.

thanks! David

All,

I wanted to call your attention to a few things about camp:

1) If you didn't sign up already, I need to know ASAP how many are coming from your family for each meal. Sat breakfast, Sat lunch, Sat dinner, Sun breakfast. I don't need to know your schedules, just how many at which meals.

2) We will have a kitchen, but no pots/pans/dishes. Bring mess kits! There is no plan B, except eating with your fingers.

3) This is a rain or shine event. Be prepared. If you have a simple activity you can lead for the boys under one of the pavilions, please bring whatever is needed for that. There is a good chance of rain, and if so, we will need a plan B.

4) If anyone has a coffee maker they can bring, please do so. The pack will buy coffee.

5) Bring class A uniforms.

See you there! David

upcoming

All:

Just a quick overview to this upcoming week.
-- Tuesday: Please get your awards earned to your den leader.
-- Wednesday: Pack meeting, 6:30pm, Kula Community Center
-- Wednesday: Den leaders - get a compiled list for your den to Stacy by the pack meeting
-- Fri-Sun: Camp out! Details and schedule announced at the pack meeting. We will have sign-ups for meal planning on Wednesday, so please plan your number of guests.

Saturday evening will be the Awards ceremony and Arrow of Light. To the extent possible, plan to have the entire family attend. (Please plan RSVPs for dinner.)

Regarding the awards, we want the boys to earn their year's badge (Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelos) at camp. The idea is that they have the rest of the school year to work on electives (and Webelos1 den continues on to the Arrow of Light). The absolute cut-off for earning your year's badge is the end of June. Starting in July, they move up to the next level, though we usually don't really ramp up until the new school year.

Once your son earns his Wolf/Bear, he can then earn arrowhead patches for every 10 electives completed. (I don't think this applies to Tigers, but I could be wrong, check your books.) You can start reporting these as soon as he earns his year's badge. If your son is getting his year's badge this weekend, check to see if he has completed arrowheads, too.

We will not have a booth this year at Scoutorama. I was unable to find a volunteer in the Pack to organize this. Please show up with your Scout to support this great Council event. Also, by going this year, you will have a familiarity with it in order to organize something for next year (hint, hint).

It was a lot of fun.

After all was said and done my trucks battery gave out and Carter and Troupe 100 did a demonstration with James on how to change a battery!

The one activity that Carter wanted to do the most was to camp out with the older Scouts. So for those who need this activity it is a good time to squeeze it in. Not all Troops Camp so plan ahead.

If it is outside a water game would work it is hot!

In case it is outside I do have a 10x20 cover. We did basketball with Noah’s two basketball hoops. All the boys enjoyed it but I had treats for any that made 3 in a row shots. I actually gave to everyone.

Aloha,

Velva

Subject: Scout-o-rama - need volunteer

Hi all,

Feb 11 (2 weekends from now) is the Scout-o-rama. If you've never been, imagine a gym with a space for each Pack on Maui, and each one has some activity for the boys. The Cub Scouts work through the booths in no particular order doing the activities. I think we can request outdoor space, if the activity demands it, but then you get more complicated setup to account for possible wind and rain and sun...

1) We need to put something together, and I am pretty busy arranging the camp-out and Arrow of Light the weekend after. Please contact me if you will volunteer to organize this. This can be Scoutcraft, a game, or any activity you can think of. I have a whole book of Cub Scout activities that must have something good to do in it, and there are lots more ideas on the Internet.

2) Everyone should plan on working a shift at our booth that day

thanks, David

announcements

All:

There weren't a lot of announcements at the last pack meeting, and I don't think that any were new, if you've been watching your email. Here is the brief list. Upcoming events are on the calendar:  http://www.mauipack14.org/

NOTE: Troop 14 is having a car wash fundraiser tomorrow at Longs Drugs in Pukalani from 8am-2pm. Cars are $5 and trucks are $7.

1) Camp is Feb 17-19. More announcements to come on this, but our big awards ceremony for the year is Saturday evening, so please plan to attend as an entire family, and invite anyone else.

2) Since we try to give out the awards at camp, please get them finished! The Scouting year is July to June, so you don't absolutely have to finish up by camp, but we do like to leave time to work on electives and awards.

3) Scout-o-rama is February 11. This is a one-day Council event that is a lot of fun. I totally blew this in the announcements at the pack meeting. For starters, I had the date wrong (I said it was after camp). We will have some sort of activity, and need parents to help run it. More news coming soon. They will have Pinewood Derby. They will also have a raingutter regatta (sailboats), but NOT a spaceship derby. We handed out a bunch of spaceships, but I do not believe they will hold that event. See attachments for more info.

4) As most of you know, Julian is graduating from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts next month. As such, I will no longer be the Cubmaster or den leader after that. I will stay involved in the Pack as a committee member, but won't be running events and the other day-to-day things. James (my predecessor) will become the new Cubmaster (again). Since his son finished Cub Scouting long ago and his work schedule can be unpredictable, there will be much greater need for the current parents to step up and run things. While Pack parents have always been great volunteers and helpers, we will need people to step up into roles of organization and leadership.

That's a bummer, but I guess conflicts in schedules will happen. Hopefully, we'll get some of the younger dens' parents to help set up, too. They really need to start taking over...

Here are some details on the Pinewood Derby. I will cover this on Friday at the pack meeting, but you'll need to know some of this beforehand, so please read!

Setup will be Friday at 2:30pm for anyone who can make it to help. We will also need volunteers for Saturday AM. Please RSVP if you can help.

Our pack meeting will be Friday at 6:30pm (class A uniforms). Following that, we will have the track open for test runs. We will also have the scales, measuring kits, and some tools/weights available.

Sat, Jan 14, Kula Community Center

Weighting & repair station: 9:30am - 11am (leave enough time to make adjustments)

Check-in: 10-11am (ends at 11am sharp)

Race starts: 11:30am

Potluck lunch - bring mess kits and a dish to share

Class B uniforms

I really don't want to make the race too competitive, but some boys work really hard on their cars, so we do want it to be fair to everyone. We will disqualify (DQ) cars that do not meet the specifications. Late check-ins will be DQed as well. DQed cars can still race, but will not win awards.

Rules are attached. PLEASE READ THEM! Here are the main things:

1) Your car must meet the specifications in the gray box on the rules. There are more rules than that, but those are the main things. We will weigh and measure them at check-in. Don't forget about the clearance requirements, too.

2) Your kit consists of 9 major parts: the block, 4 nails, and 4 wheels. You must use those parts, and the nails must go into the slots on the block essentially unmodified. You can make any part of the block as narrow as you want, but the 2 nail slots must be the original width. Note that there is a front and a back, and all cars must race forwards.

3) We will give you a sticker with your number. Feel free to use the decals in your kit instead, but wait until AFTER your number is assigned at check-in to apply them.

4) No wet paint on the track. Plan accordingly.

Car kits have been distributed. Please let me know if you still need one or have extras. They are also for sale at Maui Sporting Goods in Wailuku.

Suggestions: Paint your car BEFORE putting the wheels on. After your car is ready, put it away so it doesn't get damaged as a play toy.

If you are really tool-challenged, this does not need to be traumatic. A hand coping saw, some sandpaper, and whatever artistic decorations you want are all it takes. Some washers or fishing weights and a glue gun will get your car up to weight, and we can help you with this Friday/Saturday. In addition to the race, we will have voting on the coolest car, too.
