The one activity that Carter wanted to do the most was to camp out with the older Scouts. So for those who need this activity it is a good time to squeeze it in. Not all Troops Camp so plan ahead.

Hi all,

Feb 11 (2 weekends from now) is the Scout-o-rama. If you've never been, imagine a gym with a space for each Pack on Maui, and each one has some activity for the boys. The Cub Scouts work through the booths in no particular order doing the activities. I think we can request outdoor space, if the activity demands it, but then you get more complicated setup to account for possible wind and rain and sun...

1) We need to put something together, and I am pretty busy arranging the camp-out and Arrow of Light the weekend after. Please contact me if you will volunteer to organize this. This can be Scoutcraft, a game, or any activity you can think of. I have a whole book of Cub Scout activities that must have something good to do in it, and there are lots more ideas on the Internet.

2) Everyone should plan on working a shift at our booth that day

thanks, David

announcements

All:

There weren't a lot of announcements at the last pack meeting, and I don't think that any were new, if you've been watching your email. Here is the brief list. Upcoming events are on the calendar:  http://www.mauipack14.org/

NOTE: Troop 14 is having a car wash fundraiser tomorrow at Longs Drugs in Pukalani from 8am-2pm. Cars are $5 and trucks are $7.

1) Camp is Feb 17-19. More announcements to come on this, but our big awards ceremony for the year is Saturday evening, so please plan to attend as an entire family, and invite anyone else.

2) Since we try to give out the awards at camp, please get them finished! The Scouting year is July to June, so you don't absolutely have to finish up by camp, but we do like to leave time to work on electives and awards.

3) Scout-o-rama is February 11. This is a one-day Council event that is a lot of fun. I totally blew this in the announcements at the pack meeting. For starters, I had the date wrong (I said it was after camp). We will have some sort of activity, and need parents to help run it. More news coming soon. They will have Pinewood Derby. They will also have a raingutter regatta (sailboats), but NOT a spaceship derby. We handed out a bunch of spaceships, but I do not believe they will hold that event. See attachments for more info.

4) As most of you know, Julian is graduating from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts next month. As such, I will no longer be the Cubmaster or den leader after that. I will stay involved in the Pack as a committee member, but won't be running events and the other day-to-day things. James (my predecessor) will become the new Cubmaster (again). Since his son finished Cub Scouting long ago and his work schedule can be unpredictable, there will be much greater need for the current parents to step up and run things. While Pack parents have always been great volunteers and helpers, we will need people to step up into roles of organization and leadership.

Here are some details on the Pinewood Derby. I will cover this on Friday at the pack meeting, but you'll need to know some of this beforehand, so please read!

Setup will be Friday at 2:30pm for anyone who can make it to help. We will also need volunteers for Saturday AM. Please RSVP if you can help.

Our pack meeting will be Friday at 6:30pm (class A uniforms). Following that, we will have the track open for test runs. We will also have the scales, measuring kits, and some tools/weights available.

Sat, Jan 14, Kula Community Center

Weighting & repair station: 9:30am - 11am (leave enough time to make adjustments)

Check-in: 10-11am (ends at 11am sharp)

Race starts: 11:30am

Potluck lunch - bring mess kits and a dish to share

Class B uniforms

I really don't want to make the race too competitive, but some boys work really hard on their cars, so we do want it to be fair to everyone. We will disqualify (DQ) cars that do not meet the specifications. Late check-ins will be DQed as well. DQed cars can still race, but will not win awards.

Rules are attached. PLEASE READ THEM! Here are the main things:

1) Your car must meet the specifications in the gray box on the rules. There are more rules than that, but those are the main things. We will weigh and measure them at check-in. Don't forget about the clearance requirements, too.

2) Your kit consists of 9 major parts: the block, 4 nails, and 4 wheels. You must use those parts, and the nails must go into the slots on the block essentially unmodified. You can make any part of the block as narrow as you want, but the 2 nail slots must be the original width. Note that there is a front and a back, and all cars must race forwards.

3) We will give you a sticker with your number. Feel free to use the decals in your kit instead, but wait until AFTER your number is assigned at check-in to apply them.

4) No wet paint on the track. Plan accordingly.

Car kits have been distributed. Please let me know if you still need one or have extras. They are also for sale at Maui Sporting Goods in Wailuku.

Suggestions: Paint your car BEFORE putting the wheels on. After your car is ready, put it away so it doesn't get damaged as a play toy.

If you are really tool-challenged, this does not need to be traumatic. A hand coping saw, some sandpaper, and whatever artistic decorations you want are all it takes. Some washers or fishing weights and a glue gun will get your car up to weight, and we can help you with this Friday/Saturday. In addition to the race, we will have voting on the coolest car, too.

Reminder - Pack meeting Friday, Pinewood Derby Saturday

Hi all:

Just a quick reminder of our schedule below. If you haven't finished your car yet, please remember that we will not allow any wet paint on the track.

Check-in will end at 11am sharp. In the past, the entire group has waited for people who showed up late and needed to make adjustments to their cars. Plan on the race taking till about 2:30 or so, plus an hour for tear-down and clean up.

Friday: 2:30pm - Pinewood Derby track setup.
-- This is for adult volunteers, not scouts. If you have a kid in tow, that's ok, but there won't be any "entertainment" for the boys, so best not to bring them if you can help it.
-- To my knowledge, no parents from tiger/bear/wolf/web1 dens have ever helped set up the track, so here is your last chance to learn from the parents who know before we depart. It isn't rocket science, but there are a lot more ways to do it wrong than there are to do it right!
-- I do not have many volunteers committed to coming. It doesn't take a lot of people to set up until the end, so come later if you can.

Friday 6:30pm - Pack meeting
-- Class A uniforms. This will start as a regular meeting.
-- After we wrap up, we will have the weigh/measure station open for adjustments to the cars and the track will be available for trials.
-- Awards: We didn't get our act together in time for awards this month (my bad for not reminding y'all). We have a few to give out, though.

Saturday - Pinewood Derby
-- Volunteers: Show up at 9am
-- Weighting & repair station: 9:30am - 11am (leave enough time to make adjustments)
-- Check-in: 10-11am (ends at 11am sharp)
-- Race starts: 11:30am
-- The race will probably last till 2:30 or so. Then we'll do awards, tear-down, and clean up.
-- Potluck lunch - bring mess kits and a dish to share
-- Class B uniforms

Fwd: Cub Scout update for Scout O Rama 2012

Hi all,

The 2012 Scout-o-rama will be very early this year: Feb 11. It is usually at the War Memorial Gym next to Baldwin High School in Kahului (or is that Wailuku?). It is generally a full day of fun and Scoutcraft.

The flyer is attached. I had trouble posting it to the calendar, so save it if you want it. It looks like this is just the Cub Scout expo, but they usually have lots of Boy Scout activities as well. I will try to run down the full schedule.

They will have a Pinewood Derby competition and a Raingutter Regatta. If you're interested in the latter, we have kits I can give out at the pack meeting friday. They have attached the rules, which I assume are more or less the same as what's in the kit, but we will use the official rules in the kit for our pinewood derby race next weekend.

We will need to come up with a pack activity booth for the event. This is an activity that the Cub Scouts attending can come up to our booth and do, generally in 15 minutes or less. This would be an excellent opportunity for the younger boys' families to start stepping up and organizing these things.

thanks, David

Pack meeting & pinewood derby

Reminder: We will hold our monthly pack meeting this Friday. We will have the track set up for the boys to make test runs. The race will be next Saturday, exact times to be announced. Please make sure you have no wet paint on the cars while they're on the track. I will post the rules shortly, but each kit should have them included.

Please note that we will be setting up the track on Friday afternoon.
