New Year's Eve party

Hi everyone,

We will be holding a party on New Year's Eve at our house. We will get started at 9pm and go till whenever. Please bring any friends or family you wish. RSVPs are appreciated but not necessary. Feel free to bring food, dessert, drink, and/or fireworks to share, though there'll likely be plenty for everyone. A sweater or jacket is recommended as it is cool here this time of year (1,000 meters elevation).

Directions: http://website.digitalics.com/directions

If you want to camp or spread out a mattress, feel free to stay the night. We will have our brand new doeling (born today) on display in the morning, followed by the Broncos game.

PS - This is not a Pack event.

Camp Maluhia - need RSVPs for cabins IMMEDIATELY

There is a good chance of a sizable Pack from Kihei joining us at Camp Maluhia that weekend in February. I know several of their leaders, and they are a good group. Linking up with them may also help us cut costs.

However.... If your family wants a cabin, please RSVP ASAP by replying to THIS EMAIL (so I can gather all the replies up on one email thread).

We have reserved 3 cabins for Friday night and 6 for Saturday. These are available in the order requested. If the number requested exceeds the number available, I will try to reserve more, but cannot guarantee their availability...

There should be plenty space for tents, so no need to reply for tent camping.

Re: Christmas Party tomorrow!

Weather update - the party is ON!

It is raining (hard) widward side. A co-worker in Kihei says it's sunny, but windy. NWS forecast shows little chance of rain in South Maui, so I guess we'll proceed. We haven't actually spent any money at the park yet, so I guess we're only out the cost of the Costco pizzas if it turns out to be raining.

See you there!

Subject: Camp - dates confirmed

All:

We are confirmed for camp Feb 17-19. Please mark this on your calendars. Saturday night will be our advancement ceremony where we hope all boys will earn their year's badge (Tiger, Bear, Wolf, Webelos). After that, we will hold the Arrow of Light ceremony for the "graduating" Webelos2 scouts. Full attendance is requested for Scouts and their families, and this is also a good event for extended family to attend.

The Pack will pay for cabin rentals, but we now have to reserve and pay for them individually and in advance. We can reserve more later, provided they're available, but I didn't want to pay for more than we need. Thus, I began with a reservation of 3 cabins for Friday night and 6 for Saturday night. These are available to families in the order they are requested.

There is no cost to the Pack for tent campers.

IMPORTANT: In light of recent shenanigans on the mainland, we will be enforcing the child safety rules with no shortcuts. There are more rules than most parents will read in an email, so in brief, a boy cannot stay in a structure (tent/cabin) with unrelated adults. Plan on the cabins being one to a family.

FW: Christmas 2011 -- Birth of a New Tradition

Aloha Pack 14,

Please consider the thoughts below. During our Meeting tonight I just wanted all of us to reflect on the Holiday Season. We have jewelry makers, manicurist, gardeners, video, contractors ect in our own den…if a gift certificate is needed look into our own or within the Island. Be creative with your certificates. Wrap them with a small car, or chop sticks, a bottle of nail polish …need ideas give me a call.

Holiday greetings,

Velva

Christmas 2011 -- Birth of a New Tradition

As the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods -- merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor. This year will be different. This year Americans will give the gift of genuine concern for other Americans. There is no longer an excuse that, at gift giving time, nothing can be found that is produced by American hands. Yes there is!

It's time to think outside the box, people. Who says a gift needs to fit in a shirt box, wrapped in Chinese produced wrapping paper?

Everyone -- yes EVERYONE gets their hair cut. How about gift certificates from your local American hair salon or barber?

Gym membership? It's appropriate for all ages who are thinking about some health improvement.

Who wouldn't appreciate getting their car detailed? Small, American owned detail shops and car washes would love to sell you a gift certificate or a book of gift certificates.

Are you one of those extravagant givers who think nothing of plunking down the Benjamins on a Chinese made flat-screen? Perhaps that grateful gift receiver would like his driveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the summer, or driveway plowed all winter, or games at the local golf course.

There are a bazillion owner-run restaurants -- all offering gift certificates. And, if your intended isn't the fancy eatery sort, what about a half dozen breakfasts at the local breakfast joint. Remember, folks this isn't about big National chains -- this is about supporting your home town Americans with their financial lives on the line to keep their doors open.

How many people couldn't use an oil change for their car, truck or motorcycle, done at a shop run by the American working guy?

Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom? Mom would LOVE the services of a local cleaning lady for a day.

My computer could use a tune-up, and I KNOW I can find some young guy who is struggling to get his repair business up and running.

OK, you were looking for something more personal. Local crafts people spin their own wool and knit them into scarves. They make jewelry, and pottery and beautiful wooden boxes.

Plan your holiday outings at local, owner operated restaurants and leave your server a nice tip. And, how about going out to see a play or ballet at your hometown theatre? Musicians need love too, so find a venue showcasing local bands.

Honestly, people, do you REALLY need to buy another ten thousand Chinese lights for the house? When you buy a five dollar string of light, about fifty cents stays in the community. If you have those kinds of bucks to burn, leave the mailman, trash guy or babysitter a nice BIG tip.

You see, Christmas is no longer about draining American pockets so that China can build another glittering city. Christmas is now about caring about US, encouraging American small businesses to keep plugging away to follow their dreams. And, when we care about other Americans, we care about our communities, and the benefits come back to us in ways we couldn't imagine. THIS is the new American Christmas tradition.

Forward this to everyone on your mailing list -- post it to discussion groups -- throw up a post on Craigslist in the Rants and Raves section in your city -- send it to the editor of your local paper and radio stations, and TV news departments. This is a revolution of caring about each other, and isn't that what Christmas is about?

Blessings,

Reminder - Pack meeting Wednesday - 16 NOV

Reminder - pack meeting Wed., 16 NOV. As usual, it will be at 6:30 at the Kula Community Center.

We will have a presentation from Maui Invasive Species Committee (or MISC). Also, our new Scouts will also do the Bobcat "test" (I hate the word test, but I guess that's what we'll call it).

We have been starting the meetings late as we wait for people to filter in. The later we start one meeting, the later people arrive the next time, creating a downward spiral. Since we have a guest speaker and this is a school night, we need to start and end on time.

Also, if you haven't paid your annual dues, please make sure you do so this Wednesday.
-- Most new Scouts already paid when they joined and completed their BSA youth application
-- It is $40 for returning Scouts
-- For Webelos2 Scouts, it is a pro-rated $20 amount
-- We can provide scholarships in cases of hardship. Please see me if the dues are an issue for you.

See you Wednesday.

Awards reminder

Please get your award reporting info (awards, badges, belt loops, pins) to your den leader by Friday. Copy Stacy (sagemom1@yahoo.com) on that email. This is just for awards that are ready to be given to the boys at the Pack meeting next Wednesday. (Please keep your den leader up to date on partial progress toward awards, but that's not what we're asking for right now.)

This will be our last regular Pack meeting this year. We have our holiday party in December, but we don't do awards there. So, after next week, we won't do awards again until January.

Den leaders: Compile this info for your den and get it to Stacy over the weekend.
Webelos Den: You can give me the info at our meeting on Sunday, but please have it ready to go, so we're not spending the meeting figuring this out.

Please note that this is the last weekend of popcorn sales. We will begin collecting the forms Sunday/Monday. We need checks/cash for your total order turned in at that time. I recommend that you make a photocopy/scan of the forms before turning them in, just in case.

This is our main (and often only) fundraiser of the year, so please make one last effort to pound the pavement. Our pack's present size is a little smaller than some years, so it is especially important that everyone really get out there. These also make great stocking stuffers and XMAS gifts for acquaintances/neighbors. We have had businesses buy these for clients in the past, so use your imagination as to who might want to purchase some.

thanks, David

New Scouts - please read - Bobcat badge

For new Scouts: Boys I think would be participating are: Dennis, Keahi, Landon, Roan, Logan, Justin, Dane, Leo, Shenn. Anyone else? (Blake?)

The first award all Scouts must earn is the Bobcat badge. It is toward the front of each year's book. Unfortunately, it is not always in the table of contents, so it can take some looking.

We will do the "test" for the Bobcat badge at the Pack meeting Nov 16th. Please cover all the materials at home, and complete #1 and #8 as family activities before then.

For the "test" - we will have all the boys stand up in front of the group and demonstrate numbers 2-7. Doing it as a group is less pressure for the boys if they aren't exactly perfect or get stage fright, but we do ask that they follow the Cub Scout motto and "Do Your Best" at this.

I recommend you print out the Cub Scout Promise and the Law of the Pack and tape them to a wall/door where your Scout will see them. If they practice each 2-3 times a day before the pack meeting, they should have it down.

Fwd: New Scout Adventure

All new scouts:

Please see the attached document for a Council event for all new Scouting families. This looks like a LOT of fun. They will have archery, BB guns, and swimming. You could probably attend if you want to, even if your son in not exactly a new Scout.

As this is a Council event, you will have to register and pay ($10/person) as families.

Take your registration/payment to the Council service center (Mon-Fri, 8-4) or mail to:
Maui County Council, Boy Scouts of America
200 Liholiho Street
Wailuku, Maui, HI 96793

I also attached the document to the calendar event.

Aloha Scouters,

We just ended a very successful Family Camp Spook O Ree Activity.  Attached is the brochure for our next Cub Scout event.  It is designed for our new Scouts and their families so please pass this on to them to participate.  It is open for all Cub Scouts but priority will be given to new scouts so that they can earn some awards and have some fun with their families.

Sincerely,

Pinewood Derby

FYI - We will pass out Pinewood Derby kits for the boys at the November pack meeting. I think one of the dens (Wolf?) was planning a tools/woodworking den meeting, so consider making your car's cuts for that activity. I have a number of kits, so let me know if your den will use these before the pack meeting, and we'll make a plan to get your kit to you.

I encourage you to do cuts for your car as a den activity, since not every parent has the tools/aptitude for that. It is also a fun for the boys, and there is always something on tools, woodworking, etc in each of the year's badges or electives.

RE: Spook O Ree

I will be bringing coffee pot, creamer, sugar and fresh ground coffee left over from Olowalu. Would like to set it up with someone who has a cabin. See you tonight! I also have apples, oranges and chips left over that will be available for our designated camp site.

Hi everyone,

First, please note that I have reserved the Maui Golf and Sports Park in Maalaea for our annual Christmas Party. It is Dec 10th from 10am - 1pm. We went for the early time slot hoping for better weather. We've had cool and windy days there later in the day.

Attached is the Spook O Ree registration form. There seemed to be a little confusion on this at camp, so just as a reminder:

-- This is a Council event, not a pack event. You need to sign up as a family and arrange payment with the Council. Registration and payment are due TUESDAY. Make checks out to "Boy Scouts of America".

-- Cabins are available in the order people sign up. I do not know how these will be allocated.

-- I don't know anything more than what's in the agenda (attached) or this email. Note the costume contest and Friday is BYO dinner.

-- Council did say that siblings can attend.

-- The registration is for both adults and children, so put both on your form and include that in your payment.
-- Take it to the Council service center (Mon-Fri, 8-4) or mail (might be too late for mail!) to:
Maui County Council, Boy Scouts of America
200 Liholiho Street
Wailuku, Maui, HI 96793
-- The Council said there are no medical or release forms to fill out. There are ALWAYS forms to fill out, don't be surprised if there is some medical/waiver form requested at check-in.

Just as a final note, expect the gate between camp and the parking lot to be closed, and you will need to walk in with your gear (100-200 yards or so). Pack accordingly.

Fwd: Spook O Ree

Please see the forwarded note from the Council, in particular the close toed shoe requirement and notes on what to pack.

Note the possibility of rain and thunderstorms for the weekend. Plan accordingly...

I have some extra milk jugs for the activity. I don't know exactly how many are going, so I don't know how many we'll need. Mahalo to Linda for getting these for us.

Aloha All,

Please be sure to remind your parents that this event is a closed toed shoe event.  Also let them know to bring with them swim clothes to take advantage of the open swim if they choose too and their milk/ juice jugs, as many as they can even if they were not able to accumulate the 8-9 reccomended.

Camp rules will be in effect.  See you there for a ghoulish time.  Check in by family or unit at the Camp Office when you get to camp.  Please reverse into your parking stall in the event of an emergency evacuation.

In Scouting,

Arrival

Howdy all:

I can't make it right at noon, unfortunately. We should be out there by 1:30pm, but I have no control over the schedule of Julian's piano recital... Please don't call me unless it is a dire emergency, as I'll be rushing around myself and have a very busy day tomorrow.

Michael Currier has agreed to be there by noon and feel free to bounce any questions off him. We should have a lifeguard there at noon (crossing our fingers!) for swimming. If you show up early, feel free to hit the beach as a family, but please stay out of the cabins, mess hall, and bathrooms until the event starts at noon.

If you want to tent camp, just set up tents in the grassy area in front of the mess hall.

Camp is under new management, so I can't promise things will work the way they have in the past. If everyone can bring a few bucks, we usually pass the hat for a tip for the staff.

Don't forget your s'mores ingredients!

***IMPORTANT*** - Camp Olowalu

Hi everyone:

If you are going to camp olowalu this weekend and you did not sign up last night, you need to let me know. We are only buying food for as many people as we have signed up!!!

I need to know how many kids & adults will be present at camp for each of these meals. Please reply to this email with counts for:
-- Saturday dinner
-- Sunday breakfast
-- Sunday lunch

I'd rather have too much food than not enough. If your schedule is in flux, tell me you're coming, even if you aren't 100% sure.

Sorry for any confusion if this wasn't clear. I will send out meeting notes tonight.

thanks!

Camp runs noon Saturday to noon Sunday. We are trying to keep costs down, so we don't want to buy too much food. At the same time, we want to make sure we have enough food!

Reminder - Halloween party Wednesday

All:

Reminder - The Halloween party is Wednesday 6:30pm, Kula Community Ctr
-- Come in costume (adults, too!)
-- Each den should have an activity the boys can do. They usually work like stations the boys move around to at will, but feel free to do different stuff.
-- Potluck: Everyone bring a main dish. If you also want to bring extra stuff (pupus, salads, desserts, etc.), that's great, but please make sure you bring a main dish (we had one potlucks with 7 veggie platters...)
-- Bring mess kits (or whatever you want to eat on) for your family. The pack has some paper plates and plasticware we set out, but there are no guarantees there will be enough, and we really try to encourage environmentally friendly scouting events by washing our mess kits. Leave no trace!

Hiroko is leading the party decorations. I believe the plan is to set up around 8:30am after dropping off the kiddos at school. Her number is 264-9967 if you are interested in helping. I am planning to be up there by 5:45pm-ish to unlock the Center, but it is really hard for me to count on being out of work at a specific time.

Upcoming Dates

Hi all,

We have now reserved Camp Olowalu for sure. We had a little back & forth with the deposit, so sorry it took so long to say we have that date 100% for sure. They have comp'ed us the last 2 years. While there is no promise they'll do so this year, we can't expect them to turn away paying customers while comp'ing us at the same time, so hopefully that explains the last-minute nature of reserving the date...
-- The Camp-out is noon Saturday to noon Sunday (22nd - 23rd). You can go early or stay late and hang out on the beach (or do whatever), but noon is both check-in and check-out for using the camp facilities. Details coming at the pack meeting.

I will reserve a date for the water/golf park for the Christmas party. We usually do that right before people really start travelling for vacations in mid-Dec.

Pinewood Derby 2012 is JAN 14. We will do our pack meeting on Friday, JAN 13 and have the track set up for trials.
PARENTS: Setting up the track is ancient cub scout lore passed down from generation to generation. It ain't rocket science, nor is it simple. We will set it up about 3pm on Friday, Jan 13. I do not believe any Tiger, Wolf, Bear, or Webelos 1 parent has ever helped with the setup! If you want to hold a pinewood derby in 2013, I suggest you learn how in 2012.

The rest of the dates for 2012 are now reserved, added to the pack calendar, and the Parks & Rec facility permits are scanned and posted on the documents page of the website.

There are four main things pending for 2012 dates that I can think of:
-- Spring camp-out. We usually shoot for President's Day weekend (2/17- 2/19/2012). Camp is available then, but I haven't reserved it yet.
-- Council events: We'll tell you as soon as we find out. Plan on Scoutorama in the spring, day camp in early June (3 weekdays), Webelos overnighter (usually first Sat-Sun in July), and then the fall events you've seen so far this year.
-- Fall camp-out (Camp Olowalu, or wherever). Julian will have graduated and I'll be moving on, so parents will have to arrange this.
-- Popcorn sales

I also reserved us for Keokea Park for an end-of-year party June 01.
