$1,100. made last Sunday Popcorn Sales.

Aloha,

We made approx. $1,100. In popcorn sales this past Sunday at Safeway. We will be concentrating on our chocolate sales with free samples. It was too warm in Kihei for this product. Has anyone Sold one of the chocolate 6lb cases?

The Popcorn Sales this weekend will be at Foodland Pukalani. I will be set up by 9:00 am.

It is best if the boys come for around 2-3 hours each. This is a good way to help the younger children have some sales and get the Boy Scouts some exposure.

We will run till 4:00. Any questions please call.

Thank you,

Velva

Camp Olowalu

Everyone:

1) Please RSVP by Friday if you are planning to attend the overnight camp out in Olowalu Saturday, Nov 13 to Sunday, Nov 14. I need to know the number of Scouts, adults, and siblings attending from your family. Tell me if you want to tent camp or have cabin slots.

2) Please note that there are child protection rules on camping, sleeping arrangements, and adult supervision. I need to review those as a refresher, but in short, each boy staying the night needs a parent. More details will follow on sleeping arrangements, etc.

3) This camp out is for Scouts and family members only.

4) We did not have much interest at all in a family/friends "pre-camp" night on Friday. I still may try to go with Julian and just grab a tent space. We'll see, but based on lack of feedback, I'm not planning to reserve cabins or make group plans for Friday night. If somebody else wants to do so, go for it.

5) We will have a lifeguard there (thanks, James!), but it is expected that water time is limited to times when he is guarding, and only that location. We will clarify the rules, but it is expected that each Scout will have parental supervision. We can provide the structure and support for water safety, but the parents need to supervise their children.

thanks, David

Re: *IMPORTANT* Pack 14 Issue - PLEASE read

Dear Pack 14 Parents:

I want to assure all of you that we are following up on this issue, and that safety is always of the utmost concern. That said, I do also want to point out that Scouting has very clear rules on the use of knives. As such, we will clarify that shortly, so I don't believe that having an email forum amongst the parents on this topic is particularly productive at this time.

In the meantime, let me say that there should be no boy in Pack 14 carrying a knife or using it without adult supervision. This policy is very simple and clear, and please communicate that to your son. A Scout is required to earn an award in order to earn the privilege of carrying a knife. There are several den activities that do knife safety lessons in which Scouts are taught (under supervision) to use a knife and learn the skills to earn that award/privilege. We have historically never filed for that award with the Council, because I am told that it requires a lot of paperwork and is a real hassle. Thus, even when a boy completes his knife safety lessons, we still expect the no-unsupervised-knife rule to stand.

Please call or email me if you have any questions.

Who did it, and who was involved,  is not my primary concern (although I do believe it needs to be addressed specifically and individually, in addition to the whole pack).  Please note, I do not know who else, if anyone, witnessed this specific incident.  Nor am I sure that nothing else occurred with any other pack members.  This is all the information I have at this time.

First of all, I am relieved nobody was physically hurt.  Now,
how we as "leaders/parents and good citizens" seize this incident as an example and opportunity for our children to learn from is the issue.   After all, if we don't teach our boys & guide them properly, at every step of the way, then what are we here for?  Furthermore,  we need to define what the organization CUB/BOY SCOUTS is really all about.  Although this incident involved only 2 of the scouts,  I believe it is relevant to everyone and warrants the support of the pack on how best to intervene.  I request that you consider the situation and the following that I feel are the main issues:

  • the misuse of a tool; using a knife as a weapon
  • the rules regarding tools at cub scout events, as defined by the Boy Scouts of America Council and defined by Pack 14
  • the bullying implied by this behavior (i.e., threatening in order to get something)

How does the pack want to handle this issue?

Pack meeting notes 20 Oct, 2010

The meeting notes are here:
http://www.mauipack14.org/home/announcements/meetingannouncements-20october

Feedback needed:
1) Times you can man the popcorn table at our storefront sales. See meeting notes (or your email).

2) Do you want to camp in Olowalu on Friday, Nov 12th? If there is enough interest, and the camp is available, we can go a day early. Note that this is NOT a Scouting event, just some families and friends getting together. Need a reply ASAP if we're going to do this.

IMPORTANT - popcorn info - please read

Please read this long email. Everything in it is important...

1) We need to round up several BIG coolers by Saturday, and as many freezer packs as we can get. If you can loan us one, please drop it off at Curtis's house in Pukalani. If they are not around, just leave it in the carport.
2750 Keikilani St - map: http://tinyurl.com/2ak6orx

If you really can't drop it off, but have one we can borrow, please contact Velva (velva@myhomeonmaui.com, 250-3727).

2) Storefront sales are THIS SUNDAY 10/24 at Kihei Safeway from 9-5. We are asking the dens to staff the tables at certain times so we know we have 2 parents covering at all times. Please email or call Velva (velva@myhomeonmaui.com, 250-3727) to sign up to man the table at a given time. The shifts are:
9-11       Webelo 1 & 2
11-1:00    Bears & Wolves
1:00-3:00  Tigers & Wolves
3:00-5:00  Webelo 1 & 2

Note that this schedule is only to make sure we have coverage. Any boy from any den is welcome to come in any time slot.

3) Other storefront dates are as follows. Since we have a little more time on those, we are going to ask that you sign up with your den leader

Saturday 10/30, PUKALANI FOODLAND
9-11       Webelo 1 & 2
11-1:00    Bears, Wolves
1:00-3:00  Tigers, Wolves
3:00-5:00  Webelo 1 & 2

Sunday 11/7, WALMART
8-11:00     Webelo 1
11:00-1:00  Bears, Wolves
1:00-3:00   Tigers, Wolves
3:00-5:00   Webelo 2

4) Door to door sales - here are the important details:
-- Class A uniforms, including close-toed shoes
-- daylight hours only
-- must be accompanied by an adult - please stay within earshot of your son to help as needed, and also to carry the money
-- Collect the money at the time of the sale
-- Checks can be made out to "Pack 14".
-- We will deliver the popcorn approximately December 10th.
-- Before leaving a house, make sure you can read their handwriting.
-- For those waxy popcorn sales sheets, the best thing is to use cheap sample pens. Nicer pens that leave a lot of ink smear to the point of being illegible.
-- All popcorn money is due to your den leaders by 11/14. This is the weekend of the camp-out, so bring it there. If you can't make it, get it to your den leader before that. This deadline has no wiggle room, as we have to put our order in with the council on time.
-- Again, you need to submit cash and checks totaling your sales. If you don't collect at the time of the sale, then you'll need to front the money for that order. Only do this for people you really trust!
-- If they ask where the money goes, tell them to Cub Scouts! This funds us camping and doing the pinewood derby, for example.

Re: REMINDER - Halloween party this Wednesday

All:

My wife, Maria, is going to start the decorations tomorrow after she drops Julian off at school. She will be there about 8:30am. Sorry for the late notice, as I had to clear this with Parks & Rec, to make sure we weren't colliding with other reservations. Her number is 264-8081.

If you can't make it that early, I'm sure there will be plenty of setup left to do in the evening. Please plan to show up about an hour early to help if you can.

thanks, David

We will be doing awards and announcements (as fast as possible).

This will be a potluck:
-- Bring mess kits. If you don't have one, I think we have one or two for sale. We do have some paper plates and plasticware in the closet, but I really cannot promise we have enough.
-- Bring a healthy dish or salad (not just pupus) to share. Please bring utensils needed to serve your dish.
-- No need for desserts or sweets, as there will be plenty of that... The activities often double as trick-or-treat booths, anyhow.

Drop-offs/carpools:
-- Tigers always need an adult partner to attend with each boy.
-- Wolves, bears, webelos parents: If you cannot make it, please arrange to have another adult be responsible for your son (i.e.: more than just present). If you bring more than one child, please do not offer to watch other children.

Pumpkins

Pack 14 Families,

If anyone wants to bring a pumpkin (carved or not) to help make the pack Halloween party more festive, that would be great.  Just simply put your name on the bottom of the pumpkin and be sure to take it home with you after the party!!!

HALLOWEEN WED 20th

NEED ANY DECORATIONS for this WED> You can call and we will pick them up. Or we are decorating this WED early.

We just finished some great grave markers tonight. We are working on some more projects.

Webelo’s I, several of us have gotten non candy items for our TRICK or TREAT booth but are in need of a bag of candy. Anyone have a donation of one bag? Maria Askov has made Bean Bags for a pumpkin toss and we both have bags and non candy items for our prizes. I got the prized Halloween  silly/fun  bands! Yeah

I will be working at the Shops of Wailea Coldwell Banker Office tomorrow from 12:30 till 5:30 if you want to drop it off, also any time on Monday or Tuesday just let them know it is for me.. Or I can pick it up somewhere on Tuesday or Monday afternoon preferably so we know what we have.

Thank you,

RE: Popcorn Need Shade pop up tent

Wolf parents please fill in with Bears & Tigers. At Foodland we hit both
Door Fronts so 4 boys is great to have at any time.

I will be checking out Safeway on Saturday to see how the other Scouts are
manning it and if they get to do both entrances. Same with Wall Mart.

Putting out that we are in need of a pop up shade tent for Wall Mart and
Safeway. Anyone have one???

popcorn sales

Update,

The Maui County Council canceled all of the Store Front Sales. Apparently they did not notify me due to a cross in communication between Packs & Troops.

Anyway it is on Standby. Popcorn is suppose to now be here by the 17th. Good news is we still have Wall Mart in November.

So ANYONE who does not have a Sales Package please be in Kula Tomorrow. This is a MAJOR Fundraiser for our Pack and our boys can do it weather store front or not. For parents who do not want to have their son going door to door I encourage you to show up at Wall Mart if we are still guaranteed the date.

Everything is up in the air at this point.

Have your son get a partner wear your uniform and start covering some territory. Prep them as to what to say…and let their own charm win them the Sales.

Please report your Sales to me for recording.

Warmest Aloha,

Velva
