Reminders - Oct 19 Pack Meeting

A few reminders:
1) Please get your award reporting info to your den leader by Friday. Copy Stacy (sagemom1@yahoo.com) on that email. This is just for awards that are ready to be given to the boys. (Please keep your den leader up to date on partial progress toward awards, but that's not what we're asking for right now.)
-- I will order a bicycling belt loop for the boys who attended the bike rodeo. Please advise if I missed anyone: Dennis, Keahi, Hugh, William, Jack, Leo, Dane, Shenn, Shion, Carter, Jon, Noah, Julian

2) Den leaders: Compile this info for your den and get it to Stacy over the weekend.

3) Party next week is a Halloween theme.
-- Come in costume (adults, too!)
-- Each den should have an activity the boys can do. They usually work like stations the boys move around to at will, but feel free to do different stuff.
-- Potluck: Everyone bring a main dish. If you also want to bring extra stuff (pupus, salads, desserts, etc.), that's great, but please make sure you bring a main dish (we had one potlucks with 7 veggie platters...)
-- Bring mess kits (or whatever you want to eat on) for your family. The pack has some paper plates and plasticware we set out, but there are no guarantees there will be enough, and we really try to encourage environmentally friendly scouting events by washing our mess kits. Leave no trace!

We need to move the location for tomorrow's event. We have a quiet cul-de-sac in front of our house where we will hold the event. I apologize for the last minute change. Here are directions to my house from Kahului and a google maps link:
-- For those of you coming from Kula, just come to St Joseph church in Makawao and turn right on Piiholo at the church cemetery. That puts you on the 5th line of the directions.
-- NOTE: It is a little tricky to get here. If you print the directions and follow them, you should have no trouble. People trying to use other methods (smart-phones, car navigators) frequently get lost. My home number is 573-5631 if you need help... Note that there are two Ehu Roads. We are off of the upper one.
-- We will start at 10am. Volunteers, please arrive at 9:15. Plan on taking about 20 minutes from the intersection of Haleakala Hwy and Makawao Ave.
-- Park along the street leading up to the cul-de-sac.
-- You might want to bring a folding chair and a jacket (we are at 1000m elevation!).
-- Other than that, everything else is as described in the email below.

If you care why we're moving the event:
I just dug out our facility permit for this year. A reservation for the community center for tomorrow was requested, but was not in the list of dates on the permit I have. They frequently put evening and daytime dates on different permits, and I am 99% sure that we have the center reserved for tomorrow, but I cannot find the correct permit. Last year, we had a run-in with an extremely irate McEnroe wanna-be from the tennis club who stopped just short of physical violence last year when we closed the parking lot. (He would have had to park on the street and walk 40 more feet to his tennis exercise.) After that, the police were called and complaints were made. Although Parks & Rec determined that we had every right to close the lot, we were still admonished for not having the permit in hand. Given our history on this matter, we feel like we need to have the permit in hand in order to hold the event there, and the parks & rec office isn't open until Monday. This is my bad for not being able to locate the permit, which I obtained over a year ago. Sorry for the mix-up.

Subject: Reminder - bike rodeo

All:

A reminder about the bike rodeo (a.k.a. All Wheels Rodeo).

-- Sunday (Oct 09) at 10am at the Kula Community Center

-- Volunteers, please show up at 9:15am

-- This is not a potluck (I've had several questions about this) - please get some food into your boys before coming to keep energy up.

-- Siblings welcome. Close-toed shoes required for all (Scouts, siblings, adults...)

-- Helmets required. If you don't have one, we can probably share the helmets we have.

-- Anything on wheels is ok (bikes, scooters, rollerblades, skateboards, etc). We had a question about an electric scooter, and decided that electric-powered devices are ok if the parents approve them, but no gas motors, please.

A huge mahalo to Velva, who volunteered to get up there at 8 and close off the parking lot, as well as the others who signed up to lead this event.

Here are some notes/reminders/requests for help. Potential actions are in red.

1) Popcorn - Yesterday marked the start of our annual popcorn fundraiser. We have activities planned for the last two weekends in October, so please hit this hard in the beginning of the month. For more details, see last month's meeting announcements. If you need popcorn forms, let me know.

I really cannot emphasize enough that everyone's participation in popcorn sales makes our Scouting activities possible. Our bank account is doing ok, but not great. We have 3 main expenses in the year (2 camps and the Christmas party), but we are also interested in upgrading our pinewood derby track and a few other things. In order to make all this happen, we need a group effort to sell popcorn. If anyone runs a business or knows someone who does, these make great gifts to clients and colleagues.

Velva is arranging this, but if anyone wants to learn how it's done (for next year), that would be recommended.

2) All Wheels Rodeo (Bike Rodeo) - next Sunday 10am

-- We need a volunteer to get out there about 8am and close off the parking lot and maintain a presence so that other overflow parking needs don't derail our activity.

-- Need a volunteer to lead the bike and road safety part of this. I have hyperlinks and PDFs from past years, so the research is done...

-- If you have any bike tools, pumps, etc and the aptitude to use them (very basic), we could use another volunteer for the maintenance station.

-- Every boy needs a helmet! If you don't have one, buy/borrow one. If you have an extra, bring it. If you really can't get one, come anyway, and we'll loan you one from another boy.

3) Halloween costume party - Oct 19

-- Each den needs to arrange an activity. Lots of games and fun things are online (sample).

-- We have several volunteers to set up. We need one person to coordinate the effort and arrange times.

4) Camp Olowalu: Need someone to do a Costco/Supermarket run and get all the food to camp. Preferably someone in the tiger, wolf, bear, web1 dens to learn about planning the menu/budget for camps.

Parent volunteers: Each activity we do this year is the last one for the Webelos2 den and their families (including me!). In addition to volunteering for the sake of helping the Pack, this is a good chance for the families of the tiger, wolf, bear, and Webelos1 dens to learn how we run things from the parents who have been through this many times. Some events are more complicated (pinewood derby, campouts, popcorn), others are very simple. No activity in Scouting requires rocket science to organize, and our way isn't necessarily the best/only way to do it, so you'll do fine without us, but please take advantage of this time to learn how things work from us by volunteering.
